Why is it significant to the USA that China has 1 trillion in bond investments in the USA?
I don't actually know what the exact economic terms are (bonds?), since I don't know much about economics. So then, if you can explain using layman's terms, I would greatly appreciate it. I just want to understand what's going on and why it's so important to the USA.

Bonds are debt certificates that the government and some other organizations print and sell to investors in bond markets. It's just a flexible way of borrowing money from investors.
The higher prices investors choose to pay for bond certificates, the smaller interest rate they get on those bond certificates. And lower bond prices result in higher interest rate.
The US government is now planning to accelerate its borrowing from foreign investors in order to compensate for decreasing tax revenues and to pay for various bank rescues and economic stimuli. And the interest rates USA will have to pay on all these new debts depend a lot on whether China will buy a lot more US bonds instead of selling those it already holds.
If China starts selling its US bonds. Then the US dollar would go down in price relative to other currencies, and the interest rates in USA would go up. Which would make the current US government borrowing spree very expensive for US taxpayers. And it would bankrupt many homeowners who can't afford to pay higher interest rates on their mortgages.
